From Sludge to Spotlight: OurCarbon in NYC

On May 19, 2025, we hosted the OurCarbon® Showcase & Happy Hour at New Lab in Brooklyn, New York. We were excited to welcome a dynamic group of architects, engineers, designers, NYC government representatives, educators, and sustainability advocates who gathered to learn about Bioforcetech’s carbon-negative innovation: OurCarbon.
Made from an unlikely source, sewage sludge, OurCarbon is a material that’s reshaping the conversation around urban sustainability.
The evening kicked off with a presentation by Garrett Benish, Director of Design Development at Bioforcetech, who shared both the science and the vision behind OurCarbon. Attendees had the chance to explore application samples and learn how the material is produced using our patented pyrolysis technology. From building materials to fashion and furniture, OurCarbon demonstrates how even the most overlooked waste streams can help build circular, climate-positive cities.
The event also marked an exciting announcement: Bioforcetech was selected for Phase 1 of Round 2 of the NYSERDA Natural Carbon Solutions Innovation Challenge, supporting natural carbon capture solutions across New York State. Read the full press release here.
With this support, we’re launching a two-track effort to expand OurCarbon’s impact:
Track 1: Pilot OurCarbon in concrete and other building materials across New York, using existing production from our facilities in California and Pennsylvania.
Track 2: Produce OurCarbon locally in New York from municipal biosolids. These samples will undergo PFAS destruction testing and performance analysis in concrete applications.
The showcase wrapped with a call to action: we’re currently seeking pilot partners in the construction sector and requesting letters of support from professionals in architecture, engineering, sustainability, and wastewater fields ahead of our full NYSERDA submission on July 17.
